Charred Dreams

Contemporary Prompt

As an artist, your main character has it well.
But when everything they’ve worked for is burned in a tragic fire, they have to start all over with nothing to their name and a roommate determined to hold them back.

The smell of burnt wood. The charred remains of the  paintings I should be exhibiting; my collection; still clings to my nostrils.

It feels surreal; a terrible nightmare.

Even now, as I leaf through the pages of the Qur’an, absentmindedly , I feel numb.

A fly perches on one bony finger. I wiggle it off. It’s then that my eyes fall on a verse.

“Verily, with every difficulty there is relief.”

I feel anything but relieved.

An idea pops in my head. I dash into the sitting-room I share with my friend.

“ I’m organizing my own art exhibition!!”

“You! An art exhibition?!” She lets out a laugh that push tears of shame to my eyes.

I blink back the tears.

I’ll go ahead anyway.

She’s been mocking me, my paintings and my plans for the  exhibition.

She says I’m not known. That my paintings are ugly and don’t worth a penny.

“And that’s if someone comes.” She sneers.

It’s the day of my exhibition. Fear gnaws at my heart.

No one’s come. Except fellow 'Ugly painters'.

I’m making fervent Dua's.

Soon, someone strides in.

My makeshift gallery is empty now.

Every single piece of Art had been sold off.

Asalaam alaykum warahmatullah wabarakatuh.

Another prompt  that took me hours to form a story on.

I had to do a tad bit research on painting and art exhibitions before I could pull this off.

But I do hope you find it a good read and educative.

Lemme know what you think.

Again, constructive criticism, feedback is welcome.

I look forward to smiling at your comments and replying to them too! Insha'Alloh.

Asalaam alaykum warahmatullah wabarakatuh.
